One of the sessions on the first day of the “SMART Technologies for Innovation” Summit, titled “European Innovation Experience for a Sustainable Future”, brought together leaders of digital innovation networks from Moldova, Romania, and Ukraine. The discussions highlighted that the development of IT sectors, innovation, and digital transformation in Europe takes place under the umbrella of Digital Innovation Hubs (DIHs) – structures that connect academia, authorities, and businesses to accelerate the adoption of emerging technologies.

The session was moderated by Ion Bodrug, President of ACETI and Coordinator of the Digital Innovation Hub of Moldova (DIH of Moldova), who emphasized the role of digital hubs as engines of economic transformation and as bridges for collaboration between countries and regions. He also presented the progress achieved by DIH of Moldova over several years in strengthening the national innovation ecosystem by supporting small and medium-sized enterprises in the digitalization process, facilitating technology transfer, and developing international partnerships that connect Moldova to European innovation networks.

From Romania, Lidia Mocanu, representing the Digital Innovation Zone (EDIH, North-East Romania), spoke about support models for SMEs and the need to strengthen public-private partnerships for digitalization. Bianca Muntean, Director of Transilvania IT Cluster (TEDIH, North-West Romania), participated online, presenting the results achieved within European EDIHs and opportunities for regional cooperation. Raluca Gîrbacea from FIT EDIH (Central Romania) shared best practices in applying smart solutions in the industrial sector, while Costin Lianu, Coordinator of WE HUB (Wallachia EDIH, South Romania), discussed the development of collaborative ecosystems for innovation at both local and European levels.

From Ukraine, Volodymyr Nochvai, representative of NOSC-UA DIH (EDIH KyivHiTech), offered insights into the resilience and adaptation of digital hubs in the current context of his country, demonstrating the crucial role of innovation in maintaining economic competitiveness.

Dr. Lilia Sava, Dean of the Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications at the Technical University of Moldova (UTM), presented the xDIH project – an initiative aimed at supporting the integration of digital technologies in the entrepreneurial and academic environment.

Participants highlighted the role of digital innovation hubs as centers of expertise, advisory services, and technology transfer, providing support to enterprises for adopting digital solutions and integrating emerging technologies.

The conclusions of the session confirmed that DIH networks are an essential infrastructure for European innovation, offering SMEs access to expertise, technology, and financing to become more competitive and sustainable. The importance of strengthening connections between hubs in Moldova, Romania, and Ukraine was also emphasized, as these links can contribute to creating a shared cross-border space for digital transformation.

Through this session, the Digital Innovation Hub of Moldova reinforced the connection between DIHs in Moldova, Romania, and Ukraine, highlighting the ecosystem established in 2021 as a strategic point for regional cooperation in Moldova’s digital and innovation transformation.

The “SMART Technologies for Innovation” Summit took place within the framework of the ACETI 4 EDIE project, implemented with the support of the Innovate Moldova Program, funded by Sweden.
